Como dijimos en la anterior entrada, Orihuela no deja de sorprendernos. En el interior de la iglesia de Santiago Apóstol, un templo gótico construido en el siglo XV, nos encontramos un presbiterio y capilla mayor de un fabuloso renacimiento. De nuevo es Jerónimo Quijano quien idea y diseña, en la segunda mitad del XVI, este dispositivo arquitectónico que se inserta con absoluta armonía en el templo construido a finales del medievo.
Entre la nave principal y el crucero-presbiterio del templo encontramos un monumental arco que divide ambos espacios. Este tipo de arco, inspirado en los arcos triunfales romanos, se hizo típico en las basílicas paleocristianas, y de ahí lo retomaron los arquitectos del renacimiento. Es curioso que la estructura arquitectónica renacentista no se encuentre alineada con la gótica primitiva; el autor prefirió mantener el orden en su reforma, lo que ofrece a su conjunto cierta independencia.

La utilización de los elementos constructivos y decorativos es precisa pero también diversa; el arquitecto logra, sin dificultades, combinar los diferentes motivos geométricos y arquitectónicos con una gran coherencia.
El espacio conseguido nos transporta a las mejores obras del renacimiento romano. En el retablo, el apóstol Santiago se yergue con dignidad en un marco realmente impresionante. Bajo un gran arco de medio punto, el santo patrón se asemeja a un emperador romano, rodeado de la magnificencia de este espacio inigualable.
