En el complejo de la Universidad de Salamanca, el llamado “edificio de las Escuelas Mayores”, construido en su mayor parte en el siglo XV, posee uno de los ejemplos de plateresco del siglo XVI más conocidos y famosos: su portada o fachada principal, que se abre al conocido como “patio de las escuelas” y que se configura como el símbolo más representativo de toda la institución universitaria.
Dicha portada o fachada deriva del modelo de “fachada-retablo” que, durante el reinado de los Reyes Católicos, fue tan prolijo y tanto cultivo alcanzó. Sin embargo, y a pesar de responder en un principio a dicha tipología, en esta portada se intenta establecer una serie de principios reguladores que camuflen la estructura y posibles vestigios goticistas, que se concentran en los arcos carpaneles de ingreso y en los contrafuertes de la fachada.
De este modo, el dispositivo se revise de unos esquemas decorativos de filiación italiana, a base de grutescos, motivos a candelieri y otros motivos tallados de manera excepcional en la piedra. Todo este programa ornamental se presenta de acuerdo con el humanismo de la institución universitaria, que introduce motivos heráldicos monárquicos y las facies de los Reyes Católicos en reconocimiento, tras su muerte, por su legado, que ya en su época se veía enorme.
Es este uno de los casos en que la denominación de plateresco más acertada se nos presenta, pues los motivos decorativos de esta fachada parecen, de verdad, repujados con minuciosidad y laboriosidad, por un platero en su taller.
