Pietro Torrigiano (1472 – 1528) fue un escultor italiano, conocido por su carácter violento y apasionado, que le llevó, en cierta ocasión en que compartía taller con Miguel Ángel, a propinarle un puñetazo que al maestro italiano le rompió el tabique nasal y le confirió el aspecto que todos hoy conocemos.
Esta presentación de Torrigiano ya indica que su historia es curiosa; aunque más que curiosa, casi diríamos que trágica.
Torrigiano llegó a España en 1521, tras pasar por Amberes e Inglaterra. Afincado ya en Sevilla, consiguió con su San Jerónimo penitente, una escultura de barro cocido, realizar un estudio anatómico de referencia que muestra el cuerpo adulto y consumido del santo, con un rostro expresivo y una imposible postura que da inestabilidad y verismo a la obra.
En 1527 ó 1528, Torrigiano fue procesado y encarcelado por la Inquisición. Al parecer, destruyó una escultura de la Virgen que había realizado para el duque de Arcos al considerar que no había sido suficientemente retribuido, y el mismo duque le denunció al tribunal. Encarcelado en el Castillo de San Jorge, en Triana, se dejó morir por inanición entre julio y agosto de ese mismo año.
¿Cómo puede alguien con tal sensibilidad artística, con tanta inteligencia, poseer un carácter que le condene a una muerte tan trágica? O, lo que resulta todavía más curioso… ¿no estaría Torrigiano, sin él saberlo, profetizando su propio destino al modelar a ese San Jerónimo consumido por los años, el sufrimiento y sobre todo, el hambre?
San Jerónimo penitente se encuentra expuesto en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, segunda pinacoteca de España y que, sorprendentemente, no cuenta con una web oficial decente en que poder consultar sus fondos. Lamentable.
