Es una colecci\u00f3n de ensayos escritos durante muchos a\u00f1os y publicados en varios vol\u00famenes antes de ser reunidos en uno hacia el final de la vida de Hume. Estos ensayos pueden resultar confusos por la gran variedad de asuntos de los que tratan: cuestiones de juicio est\u00e9tico, la naturaleza del gobierno brit\u00e1nico, el amor, el matrimonio, la poligamia o la demograf\u00eda de las antiguas Grecia y Roma. Sin embargo, hay temas recurrentes, como la cuesti\u00f3n de qu\u00e9 constituye el refinamiento en materias de gusto est\u00e9tico, educaci\u00f3n y moral.
