Se trata de la primera obra que realiza Lorenzo Ghiberti para el gremio de artistas. En el Trecento cada gremio se le hab\u00eda asignado la tarea de llenar un nicho del edificio con una representaci\u00f3n de su santo patrono. S\u00f3lo un pocos gremios hab\u00edan cumplido a principios del siglo XV, obligando al ayuntamiento de la ciudad a establecer un plazo de diez a\u00f1os para estas obligaciones en 1406, lo que precipit\u00f3 una serie de encargos, entre ellos este realizado a Ghiberti. Aqu\u00ed vemos la imagen tal y como se encontraba antes de ser trasladada al museo en el interior. La realiz\u00f3 en un solo bloque, lo que supuso un gran riesgo para \u00e9l ya que el tama\u00f1o es de 254 cm.
