\u00a0<\/span>Zoophycos is a well-known trace fossil common\u00a0throughout the Phanerozoic. Paleozoic forms show\u00a0important differences in morphology and habitat distribution\u00a0with respect to the Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Cenozoic\u00a0ones. Therefore, Early\u2013Middle Triassic is considered a crucial\u00a0time-span for the understanding of the evolution of this\u00a0trace fossil. So far, Early Triassic\u00a0 <\/span>Zoophycos is unknown\u00a0and Middle Triassic forms were recorded only in deposits\u00a0from Thuringia. The morphology and paleoenvironment\u00a0of\u00a0 <\/span>Zoophycos from the middle\u2013upper Muschelkalk of the\u00a0Iberian Range is herein described.<\/p>\n

The best-preserved trace\u00a0fossils occur in a dolomicritic bed Ladinian in age, and\u00a0are represented by small forms with a subcircular, slightly\u00a0lobed outline and very little penetration depth. They were\u00a0deposited in a very shallow, quiet-water environment with\u00a0transition to supratidal\/emerged areas. The low diversity\u00a0of both trace fossils and skeletal remains point to stressful\u00a0conditions related to strong salinity variations and\/or poor\u00a0water circulation. A comparison was made with\u00a0 <\/span>Zoophycos\u00a0from Anisian deposits of the Muschelkalk in Germany. This\u00a0showed that both forms are quite simple and penetrate only\u00a0the shallowest tiers, although they are different in whorl\u00a0outline and lobe shape.<\/p>\n

This confirms that, notwithstanding\u00a0the morphological variability of this group,\u00a0 <\/span>Zoophycos\u00a0still maintained a quite simple structure in the Triassic. A\u00a0shallow-water environment was deduced for both localities,\u00a0confirming that at least until the Early Jurassic\u00a0 <\/span>Zoophycos\u00a0had not definitively migrated toward deep-water areas.<\/p>\n
