{"id":487,"date":"2023-03-14T11:48:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T11:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ua.es\/westerntethys\/?p=487"},"modified":"2023-06-09T10:21:11","modified_gmt":"2023-06-09T10:21:11","slug":"the-cenozoic-evolution-of-the-intrarif-rif-morocco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ua.es\/westerntethys\/2023\/03\/14\/the-cenozoic-evolution-of-the-intrarif-rif-morocco\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cenozoic evolution of the Intrarif (Rif, Morocco)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The sedimentary-tectonic evolution\u00a0of the Cenozoic strata of the El Habt and Ouezzane Tectonic Units (Intrarif,\u00a0External Rif) in Morocco is presented by a new work by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/gsa\/geosphere\/article\/18\/2\/850\/611688\/The-Cenozoic-evolution-of-the-Intrarif-Rif-Morocco\">Mart\u00edn-Martin et al., (2022)<\/a> in Geosphere.<\/p>\n<p>New data provide information about the depositional\u00a0architecture and enable a correlation of the evolution of the External Rif in\u00a0Morocco with that of the Betic Cordillera in Spain and the Tunisian Tell, which\u00a0provides new insights for hydrocarbon exploration in the region regarding\u00a0possible source, reservoir, and seal rocks. The reconstructed Cenozoic succession\u00a0was bio-chronologically defined, and the major unconformities and\u00a0stratigraphic gaps were identified. The presence of these unconformities\u00a0allowed three main stratigraphic sequences to be defined by age: Danian\u00a0p.p., early Ypresian\u2013early Bartonian p.p., and the early Rupelian\u2013early Serravallian\u00a0p.p. Three secondary stratigraphic sequences in the former upper\u00a0main sequence were also defined by age: early Rupelian\u2013late Chattian p.p.,\u00a0Burdigalian p.p., and the Langhian\u2013Serravallian p.p. The depositional setting\u00a0evolved from deep basin during the Late Cretaceous\u2013Paleocene to external\u00a0platform-slope during the Eocene\u2013Miocene.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ua.es\/westerntethys\/files\/2023\/03\/martin_2023.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"862\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ua.es\/westerntethys\/files\/2023\/03\/martin_2023.png 862w, https:\/\/blogs.ua.es\/westerntethys\/files\/2023\/03\/martin_2023-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ua.es\/westerntethys\/files\/2023\/03\/martin_2023-768x607.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cenozoic sandstones contain\u00a0metamorphic and sedimentary rock fragments derived from a recycled\u00a0orogen source area. The clay mineralogy in the Cenozoic strata consists of\u00a0associations of Ill+(I\u2013S) \u00b1 Sme, Ill+(I\u2013S) \u00b1 Sme+Kln and Ill+(I\u2013S) \u00b1 Sme+Kln+\u00a0Chl. These associations indicate an initial unroofing in the Paleogene\u00a0period, then in the Cretaceous period, and finally in the Late Jurassic period\u00a0during the Eocene\u2013Oligocene. This detritus was followed by variable amounts\u00a0of a sedimentary mix of Paleogene to Late Jurassic terrains due to several\u00a0phases of erosion and deposition partly related to syn-sedimentary tectonics\u00a0during the Miocene. Equivalent features (similar types of sediments, tectofacies,\u00a0gaps, and unroofing) were also recognized along the Betic Cordillera in\u00a0Spain and Maghrebian Chain (Morocco and Tunisia) and interpreted as related\u00a0to a pre-nappe tectonic activity of soft basement folding, which occurred\u00a0during the Paleogene after the generalized tectonic inversion (from extension\u00a0to compression) occurred in the Late Cretaceous. The Upper Cretaceous is\u00a0considered to be the hydrocarbon source rock, while the fractured Eocene\u00a0and the porous Oligo-Miocene suites are proposed as possible hydrocarbon\u00a0reservoirs.
