Contexto histórico y geográfico

Diversos pueblos convivieron en la etapa final del desarrollo mesoamericano, conocido arqueológicamente como Posclásico tardío, que comprendió de los siglos VIII a XV.

En este tiempo la entidad política de mayor complejidad fue México-Tenochtitlan, cuyo origen histórico se remonta a una coalición militar conocida como la Triple Alianza, que vinculó a tres estados emergentes: los mexicas, cuya ciudad capital fue México-Tenochtitlan, famosa urbe de su época; los Acolhua con Texcoco como ciudad primordial, considerada el centro cultural por excelencia; y Tlacopan, que reunió a los sobrevivientes del antiguo señorío que alguna vez dominó el valle de México. Los Aztecas impusieron con astucia su jerarquía sobre sus aliados, y extendieron su dominio hasta las costas del Océano Pacífico y del Golfo de México. Adquirieron riqueza y poder a partir de la imposición de un estricto sistema de tributación, de tal manera que a la llegada de los españoles en los inicios del siglo XVI, su capital era considerada la urbe más importante y magnificente de su época. La lengua dominante entre los aliados fue el náhuatl, que se convirtió en la “lingua franca” de gran parte de Mesoamérica, utilizada para nombrar la geografía del México antiguo, sustituyendo inclusive las voces de otros ancestrales idiomas. En cuanto al otro estado indígena, el Imperio Tarasco, conocido también como Purépecha, cuya ciudad principal fue Tzintzuntzan, que al final de su periodo histórico funcionó como su capital política, impuso su dominio militar en una amplia zona que comprendió el centro-norte y occidente de México. El idioma de este pueblo era el Porhe o Tarasco, fundamentalmente diferente al Náhuatl y que no se vincula con ninguna otra lengua del México antiguo.

La expansión de los mexicas coincidió con el florecimiento de una tradición ideológica de carácter interétnico que vinculó a pueblos que hablaban lenguas e idiomas diferentes, Este lenguaje artístico comunicó historias, deidades y ritos en los que coincidieron ancestrales mitos y tradiciones.
