Felipe I (22 de julio de 1478 – 25 de septiembre de 1506) ha pasado a la historia con el sobrenombre de El Hermoso, aunque quizá se haya exagerado un poco a tenor de los retratos que se conservan.
Por cuestiones políticas su padre Maximiliano Emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico concertó con los Reyes Católicos un matrimonio doble: Felipe y su hermana Margarita casarían con Juana y Juan. El matrimonio se celebró en Lille, el 21 de agosto de 1496, y fue rápidamente consumado por los fogosos cónyuges que se mostraban muy enamorados.
El matrimonio había supuesto el nombramiento de Felipe como duque de Borgoña, de Luxemburgo, de Brabante, de Güeldres y Limburgo y conde de Tirol, Artois y Flandes, pero Felipe ansiaba más poder. El fallecimiento de los herederos directos de los Reyes Católicos y de la propia Isabel de Castilla (1504) favoreció los deseos de Felipe ya que su esposa era nombrada reina y propietaria de Castilla. El testamento de la reina católica indicaba que en caso de manifestar doña Juana algún síntoma de desequilibrio mental, el reino debería ser regido por don Fernando. Desde ese momento se produce un claro enfrentamiento entre Felipe y don Fernando, contando el borgoñón con el apoyo de la mayor parte de la nobleza. A pesar de los numerosos intentos de conciliación, Fernando acaba abandonando Castilla y permitiendo que Felipe se haga con las riendas del país, con la consiguiente satisfacción de la aristocracia. Su breve reinado estará caracterizado por el reparto de privilegios y mercedes a los nobles castellanos y flamencos, alcanzando un papel determinante el señor de Belmonte, don Juan Manuel.
Felipe falleció inesperadamente el 25 de septiembre de 1506.
