Como bien dijo Fernando Marías en El siglo XVI: gótico y renacimiento, dicha centuria es, “desde el punto de vista de la historia de su arte, un siglo complejo” y “radicalmente conflictivo“. Esto nos da una idea de las dificultades que encontraremos a la hora de estudiar y comprender las manifestaciones artísticas del quinientismo español, si bien el objetivo de este blog no es profundizar en esas cuestiones problemáticas, sino en el propio valor de las obras de arte que iremos exponiendo.

El carácter conflictivo del arte del siglo XVI radica, sobre todo, en el surgimiento de un nuevo sistema artístico, el Renacimiento. El arte renacentista suponía una ruptura radical con el gótico español, que perduraría como estilo preferido por un gran segmento de la población durante casi todo el siglo XVI. Esta pervivencia del gótico se explica porque siguió dando satisfacción a unas necesidades representativas concretas; sus formas habían sido identificadas a unas funciones y unos significados específicos que perduraron más allá del 1500. Además, las estructuras de formación, contratación y producción de los artistas siguieron el esquema medieval; y la clientela continuó siendo la misma, exigiendo un arte ya visto, comprendido y que satisfacía plenamente sus expectativas.

Los mismos Reyes Católicos promovieron una renovación del arte gótico en la España de finales del XV y comienzos del XVI con la construcción de catedrales como la de Salamanca. Isabel y Fernando, en sus reinos, quisieron transmitir con ello una imagen de monumentalidad y apego a la tradición que prestigiara a la monarquía. No obstante, fue la propia Isabel la que patrocinó una obra plenamente renacentista en la misma Roma, el templete de San Pietro in Montorio, proyectado por Bramante. Además, esta reina coleccionó obras de artistas como Botticelli, lo que demuestra que la imagen que quería proyectar al resto de Europa la monarquía hispánica era de modernidad, en consonancia con el resto de potencias europeas. Este papel prestigiador y de proyección del arte será fundamental para comprender el mecenazgo y el patrocinio artístico de ahora en adelante.
Entre el goticismo y el renacimiento encontramos el estilo plateresco, llamado por algunos especialistas “renacimiento ornamentado”. El plateresco se caracteriza por una ornamentación a base de grutescos vegetales que la asemejan a cuidadas obras de orfebrería y platería. La decoración se extiende exuberante en espacios delimitados, lo que redunda en la creación o introducción de nuevas superficies arquitectónicas en las que introducir dichos elementos ornamentales. De un suave regusto gótico pero con un marcado carácter plateresco es la portada de la Universidad de Salamanca. Tratada como un retablo repujado en plata, en ella vemos cómo algunos elementos renacentistas comienzan a tener cabida en los programas iconográficos, como dichos grutescos, los medallones o los angelotes, de claro gusto italianizante.

Al plateresco le sucederá el purismo arquitectónico, ceñido a los cánones clásicos de los principios de la arquitectura renacentista. Diversas personalidades de verdadero carácter humanista e interdisciplinar destacaron en este periodo, entre ellos Pedro Machuca. Este artista, excelente dibujante, pintor y arquitecto, proyectó una de las obras más destacadas del purismo, el Palacio de Carlos V, instalado en el complejo de la Alhambra de Granada. En el patio de esta monumental obra, de elevadas connotaciones políticas respecto al emperador, se muestra claramente el interés por seguir los cánones constructivos del renacimiento, tanto en composición geométrica como en superposición y seguimiento estricto de los órdenes arquitectónicos.

Los principios renacentistas darían lugar a una nueva forma de representación y construcción que hasta el arte contemporáneo no serían cuestionados; sin embargo, el renacimiento como estilo sería superado por los propios genios del mismo. Así, en Italia fueron Miguel Ángel, Leonardo e incluso Rafael los que condujeron al renacimiento hacia nuevos derroteros, siendo ellos mismos los primeros que trabajaron lo hoy conocido como manierismo. Ese manierismo se basó en la experimentación y la transgresión, estilizando formas y proporciones y jugando con nuevos cromatismos, aunque cada artista tendrá sus recursos y su propia “maniera” a la hora de crear.
El Monasterio de El Escorial
En España, el manierismo se verá copado en cierto modo por el estilo herreriano, llamado así por su creador, Juan de Herrera, cuya obra magna es el Monasterio de El Escorial, enorme palacio-monasterio patrocinado e impulsado personalmente por Felipe II. En El Escorial, Juan de Herrera se hace servir de un estilo en que se valorizan los elementos constructivos, la ausencia decorativa, las líneas rectas y los volúmenes cúbicos.
El renacimiento español tendrá en esta etapa manierista grandes muestras arquitectónicas al margen del herreriano más sobrio y austero. Importantes arquitectos como Hernán Ruiz II, cuya obra está a caballo entre el purismo y el eclecticismo manierista, proyectarán interesantes obras de una gran belleza y monumentalidad. Entre ellas está la conversión del alminar almohade de la antigua mezquita de Sevilla en campanario para la catedral cristiana, conocido como La Giralda. Hernán Ruiz II supo combinar a la perfección los rasgos moriscos del alminar con un nuevo programa iconográfico y decorativo que la convertía en una construcción estilizada, elegante y de una gran verticalidad, y cuyo eclecticismo y combinación de elementos la convierten en una obra de un gran cromatismo y plasticidad.
