En el siglo XVI, la ciudad experimentó un desarrollo económico enorme gracias al mercantilismo. Esto afectó de manera muy positiva a la producción artística, la potenció. Podríamos abarcar como periodo renacentista alicantino, desde mediados del siglo XV a fines del XVI, sin embargo, encontramos pocas incidencias de este arte, más concretamente, de las influencias que el renacimiento lleva consigo, como son: el humanismo, la secularización de las artes y las ciencias y por la aparición de una nueva espiritualidad interiorizada. Cuando ya se arraiga en Alicante este movimiento cultural, es en fases ya tardías y cuando está integrado en el sistema.
En la primera mitad del siglo XVI se mandó construir la “Casa del Concejo” que estaría situada en la actual Plaza del Mar. Otra obra en la actual Plaza de Gabriel Miró, la llamada “Casa del Rey”, que se conocen sus planos y alzados, y su construcción concluyó en la última década del mismo siglo. En cuanto a los conocidos Convento de San Agustín (1585), Carmelitas Calzadas (1586), Dominicos y Monjas de la Sangre (1607), no contamos con datos que nos dan una idea sobre su aspecto y estructura en la época, pero se supone que debieron ser bastante humildes y funcionales.
La arquitectura militar alicantina juega unos de los aspectos más interesantes del siglo XVI en nuestra ciudad. Los monarcas Carlos V y Felipe II dedicaron especial atención a poner al día todo el sistema defensivo, a adaptarlo a las nuevas circunstancias bélicas (artillería) y salvaguardar a la costa mediterránea de los ataques piratas berberiscos y turcos.
También son características las torres vigía y de defensa, lo que permitía dar mayor seguridad a la ciudad. Tenía un fuerte sistema de vigilancia y aviso mediante guardias tanto en tierra como en mar, y las torres situadas en el litoral. Además, se mandaron a fortificar algunas iglesias, como es el caso de la iglesia de El Salvador, de Muchamiel.
Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, se realizaron las mayores intervenciones en el Castillo de Santa Bárbara en cuanto a fortificación se trata. La muralla que protegía la ciudad se unía con la del castillo.
Fueron ingenieros, también de nacionalidad italiana, los contratados por el rey para construir torres defensivas en el litoral y fortificar el Castillo de Santa Bárbara y la ciudad, aportando criterios nuevos y mucho más eficaces.
En cuanto a la escultura y la pintura, son escasas las piezas que se conservan en la actualidad. Uno de los ejemplos que podemos encontrar de escultura de este periodo, es “la pila bautismal del templo de Santa María”. También el “retablo mayor de Santa Faz”, destruido en 1936 y conocido en la actualidad únicamente por una fotografía.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
