Alicante tomará con gran intensidad este movimiento cultural que de nuevo será dirigida por la Iglesia y la Monarquía. Poco a poco, se introdujo en la vida cotidiana y como ejemplo podemos encontrar el calendario festivo o las diversiones públicas, además del culto a las reliquias de los santos y las procesiones. La Iglesia, buscó durante el barroco el control de la vida cotidiana alicantina mediante la manipulación de la moral pública y las costumbres.
En el siglo XVII alicantino todo el protagonismo se lo lleva la Catedral de San Nicolás, constructiva y artísticamente hablando. Se trata de una simbiosis del manierismo, con cierto aire clasista, muy marcado, y se le ha llegado a incluir en el grupo de las obras barrocas desornamentadas más bonitas.
Fue un arquitecto de origen francés el encargado de realizar los planos del nuevo templo, mucho más grande y adaptado a las nuevas circunstancias, pues en 1600 el templo fue elevado a categoría de colegiata. Es precisamente en la Sacristía de San Nicolás donde se conservan varios lienzos y tablas barrocas.
La arquitectura civil y militar durante este centenario fue escasa, al contrario que el siglo pasado. Se conoce la construcción de “L Asegurada” una casa con fin público, se trata del Postigo del trigo. También se conocen documentos de la época donde se informa del mal estado de la fortificación de la ciudad, ya obsoleta (del siglo XVII) y algunos proyectos para mejorarla, pero su elevado coste económico no lo permitió.
Dando un salto hasta el próximo siglo nos encontramos con el bombardeo de la Armada Francesa y los combates entre ingleses y franceses que destruyeron buena parte de la ciudad, pero hacia el 1720 comienza una ferviente actividad constructiva y reconstructiva, especialmente con carácter decorativo, sin olvidar el gran número de casonas y palacios que se construyeron en la época que debido a su ornamentación y decoración hacen de Alicante un lugar más atractivo.
