La historia de esta familia presentaba en un principio expectativas más bien poco brillantes.
Ya la madre del Gran Farnesio, Margarita de Parma, hija natural no legitima del rey Carlos I, estaba destinada a vivir sin privilegios y a la sombra, con un obscuro porvenir.

Un rayo de luz llevará a Margarita a deshacer este truncado porvenir, gracias a su tía abuela, Margarita de Austria, gobernadora de los Países Bajos en 1507,que se ocupará de su educación y con la muerte de Margarita en 1530 y le sucederá su hija viuda María de Austria quien tomará la tutela de Margarita de Parma.
Así pues, Margarita encontrará un lugar en la vida social de la corte de los Austria, en un primer momento Carlos I arreglará el matrimonio de Margarita con Alejandro de Médicis, hijo ilegitimo del Papa con una sirvienta negra, y esta unión supone también el compromiso de lealtad de Carlos I con el Papa, y por tanto un vinculo diplomático.

Margarita tan solo con 13 años de edad, tuvo que soportar la indiferencia de su marido enamorado de su amor Tadea Malaspina, pero once meses más tarde Alejandro es asesinado por su primo lejano.
Finalmente en el 1538 se Margarita vuelve a contraer matrimonio con Octavio de Farnesio, duque de Parma y de esta unión nació Alejandro Farnesio.
Y el futuro de Alejandro Farnesio se parecerá en algunos aspectos al de su madre, Alejandro en un principio llega a España como rehén de Carlos I, quién mantenía calurosos conflictos con el padre de este Octavio de Farnesio por los ducados de Parma y Plasencia, finalmente Alejandro Farnesio es enviado a su casa, tras la firma del acuerdo con Felipe II en 1556,y una de las condiciones de este acuerdo era que Alejandro Farnesio debería residir en la corte española al servicio del príncipe Carlos.
Así pues una historia tan destinada a estar a la sombra, da paso a una oportunidad de formar parte de las cortes españolas, y por tanto será el inicio y la oportunidad de la gran carrera militar y diplomática que Farnesio no dejará escapar.
